چکیده

We show that a reduction in vertical mixing applied inside the Atlantic basin can drastically increase North Antlantic Deep Water (NADW) stability with respect to fresh water perturbations applied to the North Atlantic. This is contrary to the notion that the stability of the ocean’s thermohaline circulation simply scales with vertical mixing rates. An Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) reverse cell, reliant upon upwelling of cold AAIW into the Atlantic thermocline, is found to be associated with stable states where NADW is collapsed. Transitions between NADW “on” and “off” states are characterised by interhemispheric competition between this AAIW cell and the NADW cell. In contrast to the AAIW reverse cell, NADW eventually upwells outside the Atlantic basin, and is thus not as sensitive to changes in vertical mixing within the Atlantic. A reduction in vertical mixing in the Atlantic weakens the AAIW reverse cell, resulting in an enhanced stability of NADW formation. Our results also suggest that the AAIW reverse cell is responsible for the stability of NADW collapsed states, and thereby plays a key role in maintaining multiple equilibria in the climate system. A global increase of vertical mixing in our model results in significantly enhanced NADW stability, as found in previous studies. However, an enhancement of vertical mixing applied only inside the Atlantic Ocean results in a reduction of NADW stability. We conclude that the stability of NADW formation to freshwater perturbations depends critically on the basin-scale distribution of vertical mixing in the world’s oceans. 1

Influence of Vertical Mixing on the Thermohaline Hysteresis: Analyses of an OGCM

The thermohaline hysteresis response to varying North Atlantic freshwater forcing is studied by means of a three-dimensional global ocean general circulation model (OGCM). The influence of vertical diffusivity is examined using a wide range of mixing coefficients. For sufficiently large vertical diffusivity the model shows a pronounced hysteresis behavior, so that two equilibrium states of the ...

Remote Wind-Driven Overturning in the Absence of the Drake Passage Effect

Zonal wind stress over the Southern Ocean may be responsible for a significant fraction of the meridional overturning associated with North Atlantic Deep Water. Numerical experiments by Tsujino and Suginohara imply that the zonal periodicity of the Southern Ocean is not necessary for midlatitude westerly winds to drive strong remote meridional overturning. Here, idealized numerical experiments ...

Sea Ice Eeects on the Sensitivity of the Thermohaline Circulation

We investigate the sensitivity of the thermohaline circulation (THC) with respect to a subpolar salinity perturbation. Such perturbation simulates a fresh water release caused by retreating glaciers or anomalous sea ice. The feedback mechanisms amplifying or damping the initial anomaly are analyzed in the coupled ocean-atmospheresea ice model. Their understanding is essential for modelling clim...

Atlantic Ocean forcing of North American and European summer climate.

Recent extreme events such as the devastating 2003 European summer heat wave raise important questions about the possible causes of any underlying trends, or low-frequency variations, in regional climates. Here, we present new evidence that basin-scale changes in the Atlantic Ocean, probably related to the thermohaline circulation, have been an important driver of multidecadal variations in the...

The Effect of Vertical Mixing on the Atlantic Water Layer Circulation in the Arctic Ocean

An ice-ocean model has been used to investigate the effect of vertical mixing on the circulation of the Atlantic Water layer (AL) in the Arctic Ocean. The motivation of this study comes from the disparate AL circulations in the various models that comprise the Arctic Ocean Model Intercomparison Project (AOMIP). It is found that varying vertical mixing significantly changes the ocean’s stratific...
